Master of Arts (MA)
Master of Music (MMus)
First Round assessments: Orchestral Conducting candidates should submit by 1st November video recordings of at least two contrasting pieces, totalling between 15 and 30 minutes overall, filmed from the orchestral players’ view of the conductor. The quality of the recording does not need to be perfect, but the works shown should each start from the beginning with no cuts or other editing. The recordings can include some rehearsal as well as actual performance, and should be uploaded to DecisionDesk.
The recordings are assessed by the Conducting department entry panel. This is the equivalent of the first-round live performance given by a performance candidate to a panel at the Academy.
February 2018 – two day session
• Second Round assessments: these live assessments will be held at the Royal Academy of Music in London. The selected candidates are expected to be available for both dates.
You will be informed around the middle of January whether you have been selected for the second round live assessment and the exact starting time will be confirmed in UCAS Conservatoires ‘Apply and Track’. The repertoire list will be sent to all selected candidates at this point; you should prepare all items, and the section/s you conduct in each stage will be selected by the auditioning panel at the time of the audition.
You should attend at the allocated time on the first day; you will be given aural tests, and will conduct a small wind orchestra.
A list of candidates selected to proceed after these assessments will be published during the afternoon. If you are selected, you will then have an interview and will, on the following morning, have a conducting session with two pianos and a further short interview.
You do not need to perform on piano or other instruments for your audition.
Your official result will be notified through UCAS Conservatoires Track after the Selection Board has met, following the end of the two days of assessments.
Please learn all four works listed below for the first round.
You will be asked to rehearse one of them with a small choir of Academy students (around 10 to 12 singers) for approximately 12 minutes. Please use the PDF versions available below, these are the editions which the choir will have.
1、Gibbons Almighty and everlasting God
2、Tomkins I heard a voice
3、Byrd Cibavit eos
4、Byrd Venite comedite
The examiners may shorten the audition if they see fit.
Selected students will then be invited to a second round later in the morning and to interview in the afternoon.
For the second round, you will rehearse for 12 minutes a contrasting or complementary piece of your own choice for unaccompanied choir (sacred or secular, in English or Latin) but of a later musical period than Byrd, Gibbons and Tomkins. For this you may choose to rehearse the entire work, or train the choir in a portion of it, based on your assessment of the group in the earlier work. Please bring at least 16 copies.
Your interview may include questions about your experience and prior knowledge of choral repertoire in relation to the course, your career aspirations and outlook, as well as technical and interpretational matters arising from the audition. You will be asked to sight-sing and there will also be a test of aural ability.
You may also be asked to have an interview with one of the postgraduate programme tutors.
